If you read my blog, you probably know that I hate moving. I dislike it so much that I just want to stay in my current house until I can’t physically handle the stairs anymore. I mentally cringe anytime my husband mentions anything positive about larger homes. Normally that would be because I am
cheap frugal compared to him, but in this case it is simply because the stress of moving isn’t something I want to go through again, and I think we have enough room already. This brings me to my main point, how much house is enough house in your opinion?
Number of Family Members
How many family members do you live with? Do they each need their own room? That is the first question most people ask themselves when buying a house since you definitely want to make sure there are enough bedrooms to cover your answer. But remember to keep in mind that an “office” with a door can be turned into a bedroom and the other way around.
I personally wish my parents had let me have the office in their house when I was growing up. The room itself was bigger and had bay windows and I personally wouldn’t have minded the much smaller closet.
Hobbies or Jobs
Do you or one of your family members need extra space for a specific hobby or job? If so, figure out how much space will be needed and look at the houses with that in mind. If an extra bedroom for that area would just be too expensive, remember that a large closet can be turned into a small office space or the above the garage storage in some two-story houses can be renovated into a hobby area.
Do you like a lot of open space or a set number of rooms with set purposes? If big, open spaces are your thing, don’t settle for closed-feeling homes. If compartmentalization is exactly what you like, a home with a great room would not be for you. The great thing about this point is that you will know what you like when you see it. Just don’t give up and settle after only looking at a couple of houses.
My Personal Take
My husband and I didn’t have kids and still aren’t planning on it, so the 3 bedrooms we have were probably a bit much when we bought our house in 2007. Luckily, we used that to our advantage for 2 years by renting out the 3rd bedroom and huge guest bathroom for $500 a month, which covered two-thirds of our mortgage by itself.
Now we use the two extra bedrooms as an office for each of us. His office has a gaming computer and tv, and I’m still in the process of setting mine up. I love it since I will now have an area to blog from, but I don’t think we need any more space. We both also love the big, open area of the first floor. It’s great for our potlucks and I like the free feeling that open spaces give me. In short, I think our 1750 square foot home is more than enough house for us.
